Production

The Process

Mouth-blown glass is formed through a sequence of skilled, coordinated steps where each sheet carries the imprint of multiple craftsmen. From gathering molten glass to final selection, the process balances control and variation, producing material that responds to light with depth and authenticity.

From Hot Glass to Cylinder

Molten glass is gathered on a blowpipe and shaped by a master blower using traditional cylinder techniques. The glass is inflated, elongated, and carefully controlled to achieve the desired form, introducing the first layer of natural variation in thickness and surface.

Cutting and Opening

Once cooled, the cylinder is scored and opened along its length. The sheet is flattened in a controlled reheating process, where the material relaxes and settles. This step preserves the inherent movement of the glass while forming a usable architectural sheet.

Selection and Grading

Sheets are individually evaluated for consistency, character, and optical quality. Variations are not eliminated, they are curated. This selection process ensures that the glass retains its handmade identity while meeting architectural expectations.

Material Character: Hand-Formed, Not Manufactured

Because of its handcrafted origin, each sheet carries visible traces of its making: minute bubbles, slight undulations, and tonal shifts. These qualities are not imperfections; they are the structural language of the material and key to its architectural presence.

Each cylinder is shaped entirely by hand, which means every production will have subtle differences in rhythm, temperature, and timing. These conditions create the characteristic waviness, bubbles, and optical movement that define mouth-blown glass. No two sheets are identical.

The finished glass is defined by how it interacts with light. Subtle irregularities in surface and thickness refract and diffuse daylight, creating gentle distortion, soft reflections, and a sense of movement across the plane of the material.

A Multi-Craft Process

Every sheet passes through the hands of several specialists: blowers, cutters, flattening technicians, and inspectors. Each contributes a distinct layer of skill. The final material is the result of this sequence, not a single act of production. While every sheet is unique, the process is carefully controlled to ensure reliable performance. The result is a material that combines the authenticity of handmade glass with the predictability required for architectural use.
